One thing you can say about the Democratic primary debates: Hillary Clinton's appalling "holiday gas tax cut" finally prompted public ridicule of tax cuts as a road to fair treatment of the middle class or to the nation's economic health.
Election years only highlight the perennial temptation to appeal to the public's tax antipathy and fantasy that smoke, mirrors and tax cuts can create economic vigor and federal budget health. Thus John McCain criticized President Bush's tax cuts until he concluded that he couldn't win the Republican presidential nomination expressing those views.
