The Gallic spirit thrives in Canada's Quebec-Ville, North America's bastion of French culture.
Cupping a bowl of steaming cafe au lait in my hands, I peer out at the pedestrians navigating snowy Rue du Petit Champlain and wonder why I waited so long. Why did I - a fervent Francophile, no less - wait so long to revisit Quebec, the first permanent French settlement in North America and still a stronghold of Gallic culture?
A summer sojourn with a friend whetted my curiosity about the region a few years ago. Walking excursions through Vieux Quebec, Old Quebec City, revealed restored 17th- and 18th-century stone buildings fringing cobblestone streets. And we spent ...
