Article: MLAs DIVIDED ON THE EAST ANTRIM council QUESTION.

MLAs clashed over the so-called East Antrim Question during recent Assembly debate on the future look of local government.

Local representatives disagreed on whether there should be seven, 11 or 15 district councils as a result of the reorganisation of public administration. The Executive favours 11 councils to replace the 26 currently in existence and has postponed elections until 2011 to enable new boundaries to be drawn.

The previous direct rule administration had mooted only seven authorities, while the Ulster Unionist Party pressed for 15.

East Antrim MLAs also argued about which districts should merge with which.
