Politicians often use colourful language to try to get their points across. Their reasoning is no different to anyone else in the business of communicating with the public - they want to get people's attention.

A recent speech by Chris Grayling, the shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, is a good example. He was talking about the problem of "worklessness" across the country, which he argues is connected to poor parenting.
