In order to take advantage of the fast growing Libyan economy and encourage the reintegration of Muammar Gaddafi's regime into the international community, the EU plans to negotiate a free trade agreement (FTA) with Tripoli. The decision could lead to a diversification and rebalancing of bilateral trade, which is mainly made up of EU oil imports for the time being but its materialisation could take years. The move could be controversial and trigger jealousy among Libya's Mediterranean neighbours, which are working on establishing a free trade area with the EU but have never been offered a bilateral FTA as such.
