Motorcycling is growing more popular and more dangerous.
The number of motorcycles registered in New York state rose more than 70 percent between 1996 and 2006, according to the state Department of Motor Vehicles. But the number of fatalities has grown even faster, up 97 percent in the same period.
Nationally, the number of motorcycle fatalities is up greatly, reaching 4,810 in 2006.
Motorcyclist deaths represent 11 percent of all highway fatalities nationally, said Dr. Anne McCartt, of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Motorcycles, she said, are 37 times as likely to be involved in ...
