April Apple came by radiography naturally, as her mother, Frances, was very active in the profession and served at the local, state and national levels.

In 1977 Ms. Apple graduated from Jordan High School in Durham, N.C., and enrolled in the School of Radiologic Technology at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. At graduation in 1979 she received the Outstanding Progress Award from Squibb Pharmaceutical Co., which recognized the student who made the most clinical progress during two years of training.
