MELBOURNE, May 19 Asia Pulse - The Australian share market closed higher today as the surging price of oil to new highs resulted in big gains for energy stocks.
Prices for base metals also rose on the back of supply concerns, boosting mining stocks.
At the 1615 AEST close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index had risen 18.4 points, or 0.31 per cent, to 5,949.4, while the broader All Ordinaries climbed 28.9 points, or 0.48 per cent, to 6,035.0.
On the Sydney Futures exchange, the June share price index futures contract lifted 12 points to 5,965 on a volume of 14,867 contracts, according to preliminary calculations.
