NEWS FACT: Last June, Kaitlyn Lassiter, 13, was at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville. Her day of thrills turned into a nightmare when a ride's cable snapped and severed her feet. The accident prompted Kentucky lawmakers to pass a bill requiring tighter safety regulations for their state's amusement parks.
Six Flags is not the only park with safety concerns. At California's Disneyland, more than 2,600 visitors were injured between 1999 and 2001. Yet there is no national authority responsible for amusement-park safety.
