RIYADH -- In response to a worldwide outcry against sentencing a woman who had been raped to several years in prison and 200 lashes, King Abdullah pardoned the raped woman. The courts had sentenced her because she and a male friend had been alone together in a car when seven men raped them both. The woman and her friend, who was also pardoned, were initially sentenced to 90 lashes, but their sentence was increased because her lawyer protested publicly. The government also took away her lawyer's license to practice law.
