NEW YORK -- Almost everyone in the United States knows that New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D) resigned March 12 because the FBI discovered he was paying $5,000 per visit to a prostitution ring called the Empire Club that allegedly has Mafia connections. Spitzer may face charges under the Mann Act for transporting a woman across state lines for sexual purposes and probably for using money from his campaign fund to pay for sex.
But not everyone knows that Spitzer was purportedly a long-time foe of selling women. Last year, he signed into law a measure increasing his state's maximum penalty for johns from three months in prison to one year. The law went into effect Nov. 1. The ...
