Rep. Julia Carson (D-IN) died of lung cancer in December 2007 at the age of 69. She was the daughter of a single mother who made her living cleaning houses and graduated from a segregated high school in 1959. Married briefly, Carson went on to raise her own two children as a single mother. While working as a secretary for the United Auto Workers, Rep.
