SCIENTISTS are to be allowed to carry out research on hybrid human-animal embryos after the controversial proposal was backed by MPs.
A majority of West Midlands MPs voted against a ban on allowing scientists to create "admixed" embryos using genetic material from both humans and animals.
The measure was included last night in the Government's Fertilisation and Embryology Bill.
The Bill will allow scientists to insert the nuclei of human cells into animal eggs, creating hybrid embryos which are allowed to grow for up to 14 days before being destroyed.
