In what could be a precursor to a trade, right-hander Julian Tavarez accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket yesterday.
The move could afford any team or teams interested in him an opportunity to see how he pitches before deciding what to give up in any trade.
Tavarez' decision to accept the assignment rather than become a free agent appears a curious one but because he was used so infrequently with the Red Sox, the club might have convinced him that he stood to gain more with minor-league innings under his belt rather than striking out on his own.
Tavarez was designated for assignment by the Sox on May 12.
