Volunteers can fulfill a role in conservation. In this preliminary study, the role of volunteers in conservation and ecological monitoring in the United Kingdom was studied using three approaches: personal participation; a focus group; and interviews. Research method strengths and weaknesses are discussed, and recommendations for future research are provided. Notable areas for future study are volunteer training, motivation and supervision.
