THE man who launched the famous Black Country Night Out shows more than 35 years ago was lucky to be alive today after a terrifying motorway drama.

Ray Hingley, now 77, walked away unscathed after his car was written off in the smash as he returned from holiday.

Ray, who set up the Black Country Night Out in March 1971 with the late Black Country poet and comedian Harry Harrison, was returning home on the M4 at Porthcawl in South Wales when the drama unfolded.

He said today: "I was in the slow lane in a Kia Pride which I had only had for five weeks.
