Adolescent substance abuse is a significant public health problem in the United States. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH, 2006), 2.7 million youth used alcohol for the first time and 1.5 million used an illicit drug in the past year. Similarly, the 2005 Monitoring the Future survey found that 41 percent of eighth graders have used alcohol, and 21 percent have used an illicit drug (Johnston et al., 2006).
