Prompted by the recent death of a runaway youth, Los Angeles County officials admitted Tuesday that about 10 percent of nearly 3,000 youths on probation and assigned to group homes are missing, and little has been done to find them.
The Probation Department has 390 AWOL reports from group homes where the county places youths who have committed minor crimes such as petty theft or stealing a family car, Chief Probation Officer Robert Taylor said.
However, Taylor said, since November he has had to reassign staffers to juvenile halls at the request of the Justice Department -- which means his department has not had the manpower ...
