In time-honoured Hollywood style, director Ridley Scott couldn't be at the opening party of the Tyneside Cinema this week - but he did send a message of congratulations to all those who have transformed the old place.
It was Ridley's (and director brother Tony's) great uncle, Dixon Scott, who designed and opened the place as the Bijou News-Reel Cinema. It opened on February 1, 1937.
