There are 21 gut wrenching switchback turns on the road up to the ski resort of L'Alp d'Huez, France, the toughest mountain stage of the prestigious Tour de France. American cycling legend Greg Lemond knows the road well. A three time Tour champion (1986, 1989, and 1990) and the only American to ever capture cycling's biggest prize, Lemond has never triumphed on L'Alp d'Huez, although he came close in 1986 and 1990, with second place stage finishes. Both led to overall Tour de France championships.
