The title of this book, if put into fewer words, would be Running as Metaphor for Life. For example, in a chapter titled "A Runner's Essential Heading," Burfoot cites a classic, The Elements of Style, by William Strunk, Jr. and E.B. White, for its emphasizing concise writing, avoidance of unnecessary words, and its stressing the use of simple words and sentences. In athletic terms, this is "economy of effort," a concept 1 first heard in Chariots of Fire, apparently commonly used in British sports vernacular. In other words, in Runner's Guide it means running as a path to life's bare essences.
