Analysis of geographic variation in the use of physician office services is a new area of study. Although numerous small area analysis studies have analyzed per capita use rates of hospitalization on an international, regional, and state level (Paul-Shaheen, Clark, and Williams 1987), few have analyzed use rates of physician office services (L. L. Roos 1983; Brewer and Freedman 1982; Chassin, Brook, Park, et al. 1986).
