The northern Great Plains' physical and human landscapes have changed over time (1, 2). Much of the interest in studying this part of North America has emphasized a macro-scale of inquiry as part of general regional studies with emphasis upon looking at major trends in social geography and environmental change that often has centered on the controversial concept of "The Buffalo Commons" (3, 4, 5).
