Preamble
Jacob III DeCou UE, of French Huguenot origins, was a fifth generation Quaker. Despite being a Quaker, and the fact that members of his family were predominantly sympathetic to the Patriot cause in the American Revolution, Jacob iii DeCou UE joined the New Jersey Volunteers and served in the First Battalion under Colonel Barton.
His story is one of rejection by his extended family as a result of him fighting for the Loyalist cause in the American Revolution, being dislocated to New Brunswick following the Revolution and then moving to Upper Canada to be near his two eldest sons, John DeCou and Edmund DeCou, being expunged from the Loyalist List ...
