Mary Beth Dodd left The Quilting Bee in Great Bridge an hour early April 28 to beat the storms to her Deep Creek home.
By the time the store-owner reached her doorstep, she was enthralled by radio reports of the tornado that struck nearby Suffolk.
She opened the door and immediately turned her television to the news. She was spellbound.
"These things happen all the time on television," Dodd, 43, said. "But they never happen in your backyard, especially here. I've lived here all my life, and tornadoes just don't happen. They're so rare. The destruction broke my heart."
