Mary Beth Dodd left The Quilting Bee in Great Bridge an hour early April 28 to beat the storms to her Deep Creek home.
By the time the store owner reached her doorstep, she was startled by radio reports of the tornado that struck nearby Suffolk.
She opened the door and immediately turned on her television. She was shocked by the devastation.
"These things happen all the time on television," Dodd, 43, said. "But they never happen in your backyard, especially here. I've lived here all my life, and tornadoes just don't happen. They're so rare. The destruction broke my heart."
