NEWPORT NEWS, Va.--Dec. 23--Newport News Shipbuilding employee Lennie Routten was all smiles Friday. "It's good to be out," he said at midday, just a few hours before the yard shut down for the Christmas holiday. Like other yard employees, Routten had good reason to smile. He's worked at the yard for 19 years as a chemist, and has survived the layoffs that hit hundreds of other employees.
"I feel good about everything right now," the 42-year-old Hampton resident said. "I've been extremely busy lately."
Other yard employees, including painters, engineers and steelworkers, echoed Routten's good cheer. Some joked that they might be hit with pink slips, but most ...
