Most of us are familiar with vaccines from inoculations we receive in childhood. It is well-known that vaccination has saved millions of lives, but few stop to think about the impact of vaccines on our food supply.

Just as we need to be vaccinated to prevent infections from spreading, so do animals. Livestock are prone to disease, especially in close quarters like a barn or feedlot. In 2007 in Canada, the sales of biological animal health products like vaccines were worth $114 million. Getting these products to market is a multi-faceted process that takes into consideration their effect on animals, humans, and the environment.
