ALLOWANCES and expenses paid to councillors in Leeds have smashed through the [pounds sterling]2m barrier for the first time.
Figures just released show they picked up a total of [pounds sterling]2,011,348 during 2007-08 - up from [pounds sterling]1,893,165 for the previous 12 months. All councillors are paid a basic annual allowance of just over [pounds sterling]14,000 to help them carry out their council duties.
In addition, many receive special responsibility allowances (SRAs) for taking on more senior roles.
