NEW YORK -- Mainstream is not a dirty word to Mademoiselle.
Grunge is.
While its readership still wants to be cool, by going mainstream and adding a generous dose of "20-something" issues like men, sex and first jobs, Mademoiselle managed to achieve both record circulation and a dramatic turnaround in its advertising fortunes in 1995.
"I didn't change the basic focus, but I changed its attitude," said Elizabeth Crow, editor in chief of Mademoiselle.
"The magazine had turned into a special interest niche book for a mass audience," she said, describing that "special interest" as grunge.
