What had started out as a major push in the early 1990s by zeolite makers to take over the leading position--occupied by phosphates--in the U.S. detergent builder market has turned into a stalemate.

From 1990 through 1994, zeolite sales in North America doubled, to close to 300,000 m.t./year, as phosphate-use bans in more than half of the states forced large laundry detergent makers to switch from sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP). Increased use of high-density home laundry powders also increased zeolite consumption.

By 1994, however, growth in zeolite use had slowed considerably; in 1995 total use in North America reached only 317,000 m.t., according to PQ Corp. ...
