Redeveloping the land that for a quartercentury held Santa Clara Elementary School was bound to be a touchy exercise from the very beginning.
Neighbors were unhappy that the Eugene School District razed the venerable schoolhouse and sold off its 7.2 acres of land to a developer rather than turning it into a park or using it for some other public use.
They also were wary about buying into a developer's vision that they feared would not translate into reality.
