BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Birmingham Steel Corporation (NYSE: BIR) today announced that Robert A. Garvey, age 57, will succeed James A. Todd, Jr., age 67, as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Birmingham Steel Corporation, effective today. Mr. Todd will continue with the Company as a full-time consultant for a minimum of six months in order to ensure an orderly transition. The Company also reported that Paul H. Ekberg, Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer, age 58, has advised the Board that he will retire effective July 15, 1996.

Mr. Garvey will fill the vacancy on the Board created by the untimely death of John M. Harbert III. ...
