INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY : EU TO INVESTIGATE MICROSOFT'S PROMISE TO OPEN UP OFFICE.

The European Commission, which is always on its guard when it comes to announcements by Microsoft, "will investigate" whether the changes the US firm has promised to make in terms of improving the compatibility (interoperability) of its Office applications with competitors' products meet its expectations with respect to competition.

The EU executive is not rushing to applaud the commitments by the software giant, with which it has been engaged in a legal battle for over three years. "The Commission would welcome any step that Microsoft took towards genuine interoperability [and] more consumer choice," it stated in a memo released on 22 May.
