For the European medical industry, the EU certainly has a role to play in the safety of hospital patients, particularly by attacking the growing reuse of medical hardware aimed for single use. While the practice is supposed to reduce the cost of health care, Eucomed, the European association for medical equipment, denounces this "false saving".
"Patients and health professionals are seriously threatened by infections linked to health care. Their direct and indirect costs stand at 11 billion per year," said John Wilkinson, the director-general of Eucomed, on 21 May in Brussels.
