HUNDREDS of deaths a year could be averted by a simple blood test, ithas been claimed.

Annually, more than 12,500 Scots die of thrombosis - more than three times thenumber killed by breast cancer, AIDS, MRSA, C.diff and road accidents combined.

But campaigners claim that simple tests and treatments - even taking aspirin -could slash the death toll.

Studies have found 5 per cent of people carry a hereditary condition calledFactor V Leiden thrombophilia, which makes them more susceptible to thrombosis.An estimated 30 per cent of those diagnosed with thrombosis have the gene.
