Peter Hawkins's introduction to Dante is distinguished by its accessible, conversational, reader-friendly, humorous style. It is framed by a personal prologue recounting how the author "came to Dante" after first experiences that "left no impression" beyond that of inordinate difficulty. Taking a cue from Calderon de la Barca, Hawkins imagines himself at the scene of his own death still asking whether perhaps Dante was right about the afterlife after all.
