On May 1, the Whitney Museum of American Art released the latest plan in its on-again-off-again attempts to expand, this time to an offsite location. In late 2006, the Whitney, battling community opposition to its recent expansion scheme, designed by Renzo Piano, jumped at the opportunity to build a downtown branch after the Dia Art Foundation scrapped its plans for a new facility in the Meatpacking District, at the terminus of the High Line elevated park. The Whitney expects to begin construction on the site, which is still undergoing a city land-use review, in spring 2009, with an anticipated opening in late 2012.
