With terrorism being a focal point of a proposed Iraqi-American security pact, US Ambassador to Baghdad Ryan Crocker on June 5 said the Bush administration was not trying to set up permanent military bases in Iraq. Leading tense talks with Iraq on the issue of further US military assistance, Crocker rejected the notion that the legal and military agreements he wanted signed this year were blueprints for an ever-lasting American military presence inside Iraq, saying: "It is not going to be forever".
