A company that runs hotels with more than a third of the rooms on the Oceanfront has been sold as one of the city's hotel pioneers exits the business.

Tom Lyons and his Tidewater Hotels & Resorts Inc. helped bring modern, name-brand hotels to an Oceanfront of older, mostly family-owned properties.

Barcelo Crestline Corp. acquired the operations of 17 hotels with nearly 2,400 rooms in Virginia and North Carolina on Thursday from Tidewater Hotels. McLean-based Barcelo Crestline operates other area hotels including The Westin Virginia Beach Town Center.
