At ship repair yards along the Atlantic coast, there are few if any signs that the nation is in a recession. From Virginia to New York, booked-up repair yards are busy expanding to keep up with the work.

For vessel operators searching for spots to have their equipment fine-tuned, there are fewer choices. Real estate development continues to put the squeeze on industrial waterfront in the Northeast by transforming iconic ship repair yards into condos and putting the pressure on those that remain. For the yards that have managed to endure, however, the future looks good for continued survival and even some growth.
