INTRODUCTION

This article examines the distribution of private supplementary health insurance and average premiums paid by elderly and disabled persons entitled to Medicare in 1992. Data are presented on the variation in private insurance holdings and average premiums for various subgroups of Medicare enrollees, including low-income persons, the oldest old (persons 85 years of age or over), persons living alone, and persons with functional disabilities. These data were collected as part of the MCBS, a continuous panel survey of a representative sample of program enrollees.(1)
