Gasoline prices crept higher last week in the Syracuse area, but not nearly as much as some expected after Onondaga County lifted its cap on the sales tax on motor fuels.
After 23 months of capping the county tax at 8 cents a gallon -- the rate charged on the first $2 per gallon -- Onondaga County lifted its cap June 1.
With gas hovering near $4.06 a gallon for unleaded regular in the Syracuse area on May 31, the expiration of the cap the next day could have added another 8 cents at the pump overnight.
It didn't, either overnight or over the next five nights.
