Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) are among the most widely used drugs for treating pain and inflammation associated with arthritis, but it is well known that they can cause serious gastrointestinal problems. Experts believe that because doctors are not sufficiently cautious in prescribing NSAIDs, side effects continue to cause over 3,000 deaths a year. As a result an FDA advisory panel has unanimously recommended adding new label warnings (American Medical News, 15 January 1996)
The new warnings caution doctors that NSAIDs pose a high risk for people who are:
older than 65;
also taking blood thinners, steroids and certain other medications; ...
