A landmark victory was won by the music industry recently. A Belgian court ordered Scarlet, an internet service provider (ISP), to implement filtering software to point out and remove unlicensed tracks being exchanged illegally by its customers over peer-to-peer networks. Until the ruling, no ISP had been given legal responsibility for policing files moved through its pipes. Traditionally, ISPs had survived prosecution by referring to themselves as mere conduits for customers' data, with little to do with the production and distribution of illegal content.
