It may have been Chicago chef Grant Achatz's night at the James Beard Foundation awards Sunday, but it was Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson of Frasca Food & Wine who became a hometown hero. Named best chef in the southwest for the cuisine of Friuli, Italy, featured at his Boulder restaurant, Mackinnon-Patterson is known for local sourcing and attention to detail. Achatz, named the nation's top chef at his restaurant Alinea, is identified with the molecular gastronomy movement.
The foundation is named for Beard, the dean of American cooking who died in 1985.
