WORCESTER - In his crisp suit, pressed white shirt and red tie, Jeffrey K. Beatty didn't appear at first to have much in common with yesterday's lunchtime crowd at the Massachusetts Veterans Shelter.
But when the 55-year-old Republican, who is waging a grass-roots campaign against Democratic U.S. Sen. John F. Kerry, started talking about the military, he conversed easily with the homeless veterans in the cafeteria.
When asked what Mr. Beatty, a U.S. Army veteran and security expert, would do for veterans that Mr. Kerry, who was decorated for his service in Vietnam, has not, he replied: "Show up."
