WHEREAS current feed formulas for young broiler chickens "maximize digestible nutrients," future formulas will "minimize indigestible" nutrients, Dr. Steven Leeson of the University of Guelph said during a presentation to this year's Alltech Feed Industry Symposium.
Ingredient digestibility is particularly important in the young broiler chick because it does not produce an adult complex of digestive enzymes, Leeson said, and this situation is further complicated by the change in nutrient substrate from the yolk and albumen to complex carbohydrates, proteins and lipids in conventional starter diets.
