Time Machine and NAS.(FEEDBACK)(Letter to the editor)

In "Better Backups with Time Machine" (March 2008), Joe Kissell says that Time Machine will not work with NAS devices apart from the Time Capsule. However, the article dedicates an entire section to configuring Time Machine to use a network volume. What is the difference between NAS devices and network volumes? As a Unix administrator, I consider them to be the same.
