The obituaries of the late Yves Saint Laurent, the noted fashion designer, repeatedly called him the man who had put the pantsuit on the map, stylish and acceptable to women at all levels. Pantsuits today are as much a part of women's apparel as dresses, skirts or anything else. They can be worn in the boardroom, the office, the shop, the school or elsewhere. It was not always so. The process has taken a long time - at least 160 years here in America, where trousers on women were long associated with radical, unfeminine and dangerous ideas and where proper women rode their horses sidesaddle only.
